There’s nothing more important than keeping your home secure.  Whether you’re at work all day or go on a vacation, you want to have the confidence that your home and kids are always safe.   And a home security system can certainly help do just that.

There are so many different home security systems on the market that it can be overwhelming to know where to start.   You might want a basic system or maybe you have a big home and need a more elaborate home system.

Either way, below are 5 tips to help you find the best home security system.

#1 Know Your Home

The first thing to consider when purchasing a home security system is to figure out what would work best for your home.  Depending on whether you own a home, rent an apartment, or want to secure your business, the size of the space can help narrow down the choices.

If you live in a condominium, the homeowners association might prohibit you from drilling a hole in the exterior wall.  In this case, a wireless alarms might be the best choice.  If you live in a single family home, you’ll have a wider range of options and can choose from either a wireless system or a wired system that suits your home.

#2 Learn about the different equipment offered

There are many different types of equipment offered and it’s important to really understand the best type for your home and what you’re purchasing.  Learn how the different system works and what home automation is and whether that suits you best.

Research the various companies and by understanding the different products, you can be in a better position to get a good deal and that you won’t be up-sold for extras you might not need.

# 3 DIY v. Professional Monitoring

There are both DIY systems and professional monitoring systems.   DIY monitoring, which has become very popular in recent years, is when your alarm goes off, it’s up to you to gauge the importance of the alert and then decide whether or not you want to contact the authorities.

This could be problematic if you are a heavy sleeper and miss an alert that can become serious, but these systems are generally less expensive.

A DIY system gives you a little more freedom of where you want to place the equipment in your home and it’s easier to transport if you move.   Most of these systems are easy to install without any additional tools and simply with adhesive backing.    Without having an installation fee, it saves even more money.

With a professional system, you’ll have the security of knowing that the system is installed properly and that you don’t have to worry about missing an alert.  Any tripped system will contact the authorities directly.

#4 Cameras vs Sensors

Most home security system will include an indoor or outdoor security camera that can be purchased with a package or as a standalone feature.  If you have a large home or just want the ability to see around your property, than a camera will probably suit you best.

If you live in a smaller home or an apartment, then motion sensors are a good option that can still keep your place feel secure.  Most of the companies will have a mobile alert capability that can help you track the activity in your home.

#5 Get Multiple Quotes

Once you’ve decided exactly what you want, get as many quotes as you can from the different home-security companies.  This will not only help you get the best price, but can determine how the customer service handles your phone call and answers all your question.

Look for on-line reviews of the companies to see how other consumers like the company and the product.  Make sure they have a good warranty so you know that your system is always working and secure.

Keeping your home secure is one of the most important things you can do for your peace of mind and to keep your kids safe.
